Collective Impact - How do we provide the tools & resources needed to ensure our young men of color succeed?

The benefits of mentoring and out of school time programming are broadly accepted as strategies to assist youth in navigating challenges and providing positive and meaningful relationships. But are these strategies effective in serving our young men of color? Are we providing the right tools and opportunities that resonate with them?

Join the Chicago Mentoring Collaborative for a panel discussion that will address what we as mentoring and youth development practitioners can do to better equip and position our young men of color for success.

National Mentoring Resource Center

https://nationalmentoringresourcecenter.org/about/

The National Mentoring Resource Center serves to provide youth mentoring practitioners with support in more deeply incorporating evidence-based practices to support positive youth outcomes.

In the fall of 2013, MENTOR analyzed needs and trends in the field across a broad array of stakeholders, including national organizations, MENTOR’s local Affiliates across the country, and grassroots service providers. This analysis informed the initial development of the National Mentoring Resource Center.

Future additions and revisions will be informed by ongoing use and feedback of this resource.

New study highlights role of mentors in providing mental health support

  • We propose a framework for delegating some mental health service tasks to paraprofessional mentors.

  • Appropriately scaled, paraprofessionals can reduce the burden of youth’s mental health difficulties.

  • With training, a subset of mentors could increase engagement in and deliver mental health services.

  • Training, supervision, and documentation of services will be critical to scale.

  • Paraprofessional youth mentorship requires research to establish efficacy.
